Look At Your Garden Grow!
Spring has sprung and now is the time to get your garden in tip top shape for the summer. Whether you have a small yard, an unruly garden or neat and tidy turf, here are some useful tips to have your flowers blooming and your neighbours green with envy!
Follow the Sun
Planning out and visualising your garden is an important step to bringing it to life. Keep an eye on where the sun hits your garden, if you are lucky enough to enjoy the sun in your garden from morning til night then you won’t have an issue with this step.
However, if your garden only gets a few hours of sunlight a day, you will want to find the spot that holds that sun for the longest and start planting your flowers there. Most edible plants need at least 6 hours of sunlight so this way you can give them as much of that glorious sunlight as possible.
Mulch!
Apply 2-3 inches of mulch between plants to help decrease the chance of weeds in your garden and also help the plants retain water so you don’t have to water them as often. It is also a good idea to start your garden off near a water source so you don’t have to lug a heavy watering can around with you all the time.
It is also important to research your plants before you go planting them. You need to know the conditions in which they thrive, how much room they are going to need to grow properly and its also important to make sure you are planting them at the right time – you don’t want the frost ruin a freshly bloomed garden.
Get the family involved
If you have children or grandchildren playing in the garden, it can be an anxious watch as they run dangerously close to your flowers. Get them involved and teach them the benefits of gardening with fun activities that pass the time but are also educational.
Take an empty 1ltr drink bottle and remove the outer labels. Making sure it is clean and dry, cut off the bottom of the bottle about 2 inches up. Next take a small plant pot and line it with your favourite soil. Take a seed and place it into the soil. Then place your bottle directly on top of the soil, making sure to cover the seed. Now you have your very own miniature greenhouse. This provides optimum conditions for the seed to sprout and you can keep track of its progress every day!
