Coats and Jackets FAQs
What’s the difference between coats and jackets?
Stuck on whether you need a coat or jacket? As a rule of thumb, it’s all in the thickness. Coats tend to be more padded than jackets, making them ideal for cold winter days. Jackets still have padding, but not as much - think leather jackets or the staple rain jacket.
Coats
- Mid-thigh or longer in length, with more coverage.
- Warmer - usually padded and made from heavier fabrics.
- Suitable for all occasions - a quilted coat will keep you snug at a Christmas market and a belted wool coat is perfect for heading out in the evening chill.
Jackets
- Shorter than coats, usually ending at or just below the waist.
- Lightweight, with more freedom of movement.
- Best for transitional dressing between seasons.
How many coats does a woman need?
There’s no such thing as too many coats in our eyes. (We’re biassed, we know.) Different coats and jackets serve different purposes - your padded parka coat may keep the chill off in November, but it’s too warm for the start of summer.
Our stylists suggest:
- A lightweight jacket for when you need an extra layer. We’re talking canvas jackets for a spring walk and leather jackets for autumnal evenings out.
- The rain coat, essential for keeping dry on wet-weather days. Look for a structured fit - you don’t want the coat to be too tight or it won’t fit over layers. And you definitely don’t want it to be too loose, or you’ll get wet!
- Investing in a quality winter coat. Teddy and borg styles will keep you warm and can be dressed up or down all season long. If you love the outdoors, opt for a lined padded or parka coat with a hood for cosy, dry adventures.
- A formal coat for those dressier celebrations or work events. Keep it classic with a belted number or turn heads in a glam faux fur piece.
Which coats are the warmest in winter?
For ultimate warmth in the winter, look for coats with:
Weight
The heavier the coat, the more the layers are made from thick fabrics, perfect for keeping you snug.
Lining
By trapping air between your coat and your body, lining provides an extra layer of insulation.
A hood
Did you know we lose almost 10% of body heat through our heads? A coat with a hood is a no-brainer for protecting against the cold.
Waterproofing or water resistance
Your parents told you not to go out with wet hair or you’ll catch a cold. The same can be said for the coat style you wear in the rain.
Choose a water resistant coat as a minimum. They’ll keep the wet at bay long enough for you to get somewhere dry. But if you’re caught in a downpour with no cover in sight, you’ll feel the chill as the water resistance wears off.
For absolute confidence in any winter weather, a waterproof coat is a must. Always check the label inside a coat to understand its level of rain resistance.
