Cruise Wear FAQs

What is cruise wear?

Cruise wear is used to describe all the clothes you can wear on a cruise. Holidays on the sea are about R&R, but they can also be jam-packed with activities and adventure. So, you need to pack your case with the right clothes for a fantastic trip away.

What to wear during the day on a cruise?

Daytime cruise wear is the most casual dress code aboard a ship. Whether you’re sailing to a new island or visiting a local restaurant on-shore, it’s the time to wear your more relaxed pieces. Think matching co-ords, shorts and a cami vest, or linen trousers and a lightweight shirt.

Check out our complete guide to stylish cruise outfits for all of our packing tips and styling tricks for holidays at sea.

How to dress for an evening on a cruise?

Cocktail hour is when outfits ramp up. Party dresses, silky midis, and glitzy jumpsuits are all perfect for enjoying a tipple before (or after) dinner.

Evenings aboard a ship tend to be the most formal affairs - particularly on Gala Night or for the Captain’s Dinner. It’s where you can get your fanciest items out to play, like a stunning, embellished maxi number or tailored black jumpsuit. Add a shawl or shrug and a comfy pair of heels, and you’re set for a gorgeous night.

Our cruise dresses edit has all the pieces you need for nights at sea.

What to wear on a Caribbean cruise?

Jetting off to the beautiful islands in the Caribbean? Then you need cruise clothes to match. It’s going to be hot, so make sure you’ve got lightweight clothes for everyday relaxing and exploring.

What to wear on a Caribbean cruise during the day:

  • A couple of pairs of linen shorts
  • A few t-shirts and cami tops
  • One co-ord or matching set for more formal lunch settings
  • Swimwear
  • A cover up
  • Sandals or flip flops
  • Comfy walking shoes (trainers are fab)
  • Cap or sunhat
  • Sunglasses

The dress code steps up a level at night, so pack a few formal outfits you can rewear throughout your trip.

What to pack for evenings:

  • Two-three smart dresses (like an elegant sequin maxi or pleated midi)
  • A jumpsuit (try a tailored style if you fancy something a little different)
  • A cover up - a neutral scarf or shrug works a treat at keeping the breeze off
  • A couple of pairs of heels or fancy flats
  • Evening bag
  • Jewellery

Head to our cruise dress code guide for more information about what to wear at every moment of your holiday.

Can you wear jeans on a cruise?

On most cruises, jeans are acceptable during the daytime and some ‘smart casual’ or ‘cruise casual’ nights. But, if you’re somewhere warm, they’re not the most comfortable item of clothing.

We recommend packing breathable, lightweight bottoms instead, like linen trousers or shorts. A maxi skirt is another great alternative to denim jeans - it gives maximum coverage, but is breezier and more suitable for days in the sun. Pair with a plain tee or cami and you’re all set for a gorgeous day of exploring a new place.

For casual evenings, a pair of fitted or floaty wide-legged trousers with a sleeveless blouse is a cool, stylish combination. Pop a lightweight blazer over the top to smarten the look, or dress it down with neutral trainers.

Remember, what is and what isn’t ‘acceptable’ ladies’ cruise wear will be detailed in the dress code. Ask your cruise or tour operator for this ahead of your trip so you can pack with confidence. You can also find a list of what to pack for both 7-day and longer cruises in our blog: How to pack for a cruise.
