Knitwear for Women FAQs
Questions on how to care for your knitwear? You’re in the right place.
How to wash knitwear?
When it comes to washing knitwear, you need an extra dash of TLC to keep them in perfect condition:
- Always check the label for instructions on how to care for your knitted items.
- For handwash-only pieces, add a small amount of delicate detergent to a bowl of warm water. Gently pass the fabric between your hands until it’s looking clean and smelling fresh.
- Machine-ready knits should be turned inside out before they go into the wash. Remember to close any fastenings (buttons, zips) to prevent them snagging.
- If in doubt, use the delicate setting on your washing machine and run the cycle at a low temperature (30°C or less).
- To keep your knitwear the right size and shape, lay it flat and leave it to air dry. Avoid putting delicate knitwear or woollen items on hangers to dry, as they could stretch and end up in the wrong shape.
How to store knitwear?
How you store your knitwear makes all the difference on how your favourite knits look, feel, and last. Knitted fabrics can lose shape if they’re kept on hangers in wardrobes - or worse, hooked over the back of a door.
Neatly fold your jumpers, cardigans, and knit dresses and pop them on a wardrobe shelf or in a draw. The further away from heat, like radiators on full whack, the better. Your softest cardi is made from fibres that break down in the heat, so try to store them somewhere cool and dry.
How to stop knitwear bobbling?
We’ve all had a knit sweater that’s grown small bobbles over time. Bobbling (or pilling) is caused when short or broken fibres get tangled into small balls or knots. You’ll spot them on the parts that see the most wear and tear, like the elbows and underarms of tops and knees of trousers.
To limit your best sweater from bobbling, you should:
- Follow the care and washing instructions on your clothing’s label.
- Try to limit the number of times you wash your knitwear (within reason, you still want to stay smelling fresh). Where possible, handwash your knitted pieces.
- Keep your knits folded and stored away from heat. For added protection, keep them in garment bags.
